When wildfires devastated vast areas of Latin America’s tropical forests — including up to 70% of Brazil’s Jataí Ecological Station — conservation teams were left relying on slow, imprecise, and often dangerous methods to assess the damage.

In response,  Brazil Flying Labs, in partnership with WeRobotics, stepped into a leading role to design and implement a powerful, scalable solution. By mobilizing local scientists, students, and changemakers, the team developed an open-source AI platform capable of instantly classifying fire severity using drone and satellite imagery — dramatically improving the speed, accuracy, and safety of post-fire assessments.

This breakthrough was made possible thanks to the invaluable support of Tech To The Rescue, whose AI for Changemakers Accelerator and Lenovo AI for Social Impact Lab fellowship connected the team with AI expertise and strengthened their capacity to bring this solution to life for conservation efforts.
