Zimbabwe Flying Labs had the honour of participating in the 5th African Philanthropy Conference, held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, alongside over 300 delegates from more than 48 countries. This gathering provided a vital platform for discussing the future of African philanthropy, with key sessions on Climate Change, Climate Justice, and the growing role of AI and Robotics in the sector. The discussions resonated with our ongoing efforts in the Flying Labs Network, particularly as we examine how emerging technologies are transforming philanthropy in Africa.

One of the most relevant sessions to our work was the plenary on Philanthropy and Technology – AI and Robotics. This session underscored how digital technologies, particularly AI and robotics, are revolutionizing the way philanthropic organizations engage with communities, beneficiaries, and donors. These tools are becoming essential for improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and reach of impact-driven work, enabling organizations to harness data for more informed decision-making.

At Zimbabwe Flying Labs, we are dedicated to using drones, AI, and robotics to create lasting, positive change in Zimbabwe. Our work spans several critical areas, including:

  • Drone Training: Through Precision Drone Training, our  CAAZ-certified Drone Training School, we offer professional training required to obtain a Remote Pilot License (RPL), empowering individuals to use drones for data collection and analysis in various sectors.
  • Precision Agriculture: We use drones to support farmers with real-time data on crop health, pest management, and resource optimization. In Banket, for example, our drones helped farmers combat an armyworm infestation, demonstrating how technology can play a vital role in protecting food security.
  • STEM Education: Our workshops, holiday camps, and drone clubs are introducing young learners to drone technology, bridging the knowledge gap and inspiring the next generation of innovators. Our partnership with DataCamp has allowed us to reach over 100 learners with scholarships, offering courses such as  AI fundamentals, data science, and coding, equipping recipients with the skills needed for the digital future.

As part of the Flying Labs Network, which operates in over 30 countries across the Global South, Zimbabwe Flying Labs benefits from the collective knowledge and expertise of a global community. This interconnected Network allows us to share best practices, scale solutions, and implement impactful programs tailored to the unique challenges of our continent, from disaster risk reduction in South Africa to environmental conservation in Senegal. With this spirit of collaboration and knowledge sharing, we valued that the conference provided opportunities for Zimbabwe Flying Labs to engage with other organizations interested in leveraging technology for social good in Africa.

The 5th African Philanthropy Conference affirmed the importance of technology in shaping Africa’s philanthropic future. At Zimbabwe Flying Labs, we are excited to be at the forefront of this movement, using drones, AI, and robotics to create meaningful, lasting change in communities. As part of a larger global network, we remain committed to driving innovation and empowering individuals through technology.

We are exploring exciting potential collaborations with like-minded organisations. If you are interested in partnering with us on AI projects, please reach out to us zimbabwe@flyinglabs.org
