STEM in Action: The Impact of Drone Clubs on Zimbabwe’s Youth

Through Zimbabwe Flying Labs' Drone Club, students from local schools are building confidence, creativity, and a sense of possibility for the future.

October 24th, 2024

Our journey at Zimbabwe Flying Labs has been one of continuous learning and adaptation, with a key focus on contextualizing technology for young learners from both global and local perspectives. The introduction of the Drone Club in local schools exemplifies our commitment to empowering the next generation.

The club’s offerings have expanded over time, starting with basic drone maneuvers and coding and now incorporating real-world problem-solving through drone technology. We’ve also introduced Twin Science Robotics, taught the fundamentals of building a quadcopter, and explored artificial intelligence in tandem with drones. Over the last 10 months, 40 young learners, 34% of whom are girls, have participated in this in-house program, sparking their curiosity and expanding their horizons.

Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), our youth program is designed to provide comprehensive, hands-on learning experiences. The Drone Club curriculum covers everything, from drone safety and flight mechanics to aerial photography and mapping. Our interactive approach ensures students are not just passive learners but active participants in the learning process. As they  work with drones during the sessions, they develop valuable technical skills and are introduced to concepts in engineering, coding, and design, all while tackling real-world challenges.

Through our Drone Club and Saturday Club, students are building confidence, creativity, and a sense of possibility for the future. The program has sparked interest in STEM careers, especially among girls, who are often underrepresented in these fields. By providing them with these opportunities, Zimbabwe Flying Labs is contributing to a future workforce equipped with the skills needed for the evolving landscape of technology and innovation.
