In the DNA of Uganda Flying Labs (UFL) is a strong commitment to empowering people through training across sectors with the skills to use emerging technologies to alleviate social and economic challenges. This quarter, we recognized the need to create a teaser experience that would help our community appreciate the power of drone data.

On April 26th, 2025, we hosted an engaging and inspiring workshop at The Innovation Village, themed “Unlocking the Power of UAV Data.” It was designed as an intensive, hands-on session focused on hands-on learning, group interaction, and collaboration. Participants were given a glimpse into the depth and value of our long-term training program, which integrates mission planning, drone regulations, flight operations, safety protocols, hardware knowledge, photogrammetry, mapping, fieldwork, drone logbooks, data processing and analysis, as well as the use of GIS and ML/AI tools. Though intimate in size, with just five passionate participants, the energy, curiosity, and exchange of ideas filled the room with possibility.

The workshop brought together professionals from diverse sectors: land surveying and geomatics, computer science, and biomedical engineering, each eager to explore how drones are reshaping the way we collect and use data in our respective fields.

Facilitated by our team members, the workshop kicked off with open discussions around the potential of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). What started as a technical introduction quickly became a lively conversation. The participants shared insights from their sectors and reflected on how drones could enhance impact in their own work. One participant from the medical field was particularly inspired by the concept of using drones for healthcare logistics, calling it “a truly informative and eye-opening experience.”

A Peek into Drone Data Processing

To bring these ideas to life, we moved from discussion to action. Using DroneDeploy and Pix4Dmapper, participants took part in a simple drone data processing exercise, a guided session designed to spark curiosity and demonstrate just how accessible drone mapping technology can be.

This hands-on activity allowed attendees to go through the workflow of creating maps and 3D models from drone imagery. More than just learning to use the software, they also realised the endless applications UAV data holds, from planning infrastructure to tracking environmental change.

Seeing how fast and accurately multiple photographs can be turned into a single usable map was just fascinating.

One of the more surprising and exciting discussions emerged around the use of acoustic terrestrial robots in ecosystem conservation. The idea that terrestrial tools can complement drones in reforestation, wildlife species monitoring, and protect sensitive ecosystems captured everyone's attention. It was a powerful reminder of how an array of technology, when used intentionally, can help protect what matters most.

What Comes Next?

This workshop was just the beginning. Several attendees expressed interest in joining our professionally tailored drone training programs, and we’re excited to announce that our next workshop will dive into the basics of drone flight training—perfect for anyone ready to go from planning to piloting. In this course participants will find the convergence of people with shared goals, collaborating effectively to solve complex problems in future engagements.
