Reflecting on Spain Flying Labs' Journey and Impact in the Global Network

After years of remarkable contributions and impactful STEAM and reforestation projects, Spain Flying Labs is starting a new journey beyond the global Flying Labs Network. It's always a bittersweet feeling when we have to bid farewell to Flying Labs, more so to one that has shown tremendous commitment and excellent craftsmanship in their work, with remarkable contributions to developing drones for social good purposes. Spain's exit from our global Network leaves us with a moment to reflect on their impact in the last couple of years and affirm our resolve that they will carry on with the spirit of innovation beyond the Network.

In 2019, under the leadership of Natxo Varona, who was committed to leveraging his expertise to foster a new generation of STEAM enthusiasts, Spain officially became the 29th Flying Labs in our Network. Their work spanned from the greening of landscapes through reforestation initiatives, to valuable discussions with fellow Flying Labs colleagues that shaped the growth of the Network, to developing drones for precision agriculture. Their latest creation is an autonomous agricultural robot with automatic management of implements and a precision of less than 5 centimeters, demonstrating the transformative power of technology in bettering our world.

Their commitment to the future was no less significant. With a series of STEAM activities organized, Spain Flying Labs became a catalyst for change, encouraging young minds to engage with robotics, become familiar with the assembly of an open-source drone, practice collaborative methodology and self-knowledge, reflect on the many uses of drone technology, and become aware of social challenges. Natxo and his team created spaces where children, especially girls, could dream of careers in science and technology, breaking stereotypes and fostering a culture of inclusivity.

The Build Peace Conference in Germany was also a testament to their dedication to working with other Flying Labs. There, alongside Cameroon, Bolivia, and Uganda Flying Labs, they led a demo STEAM session for adults and children. This event showcased their prowess and belief in the unity of learning for all ages.

Spain Flying Labs was more than just a participant in the Network; they were a driving force in several internal courses, webinars, and working groups. Whether it was lending their voice to our Translation Working Group to translate resources for the Spanish-speaking Flying Labs, participating in discussions around data ethics to improve the overall privacy safety of the use of drones in different sectors, advancing innovation in the agricultural sector through the Farm Robotics Working Group, or contributing to shaping the safety culture course, they embodied the spirit of collaboration and shared growth.

As it is commonly said in Spanish, "Hasta luego." We reflect on your journey with immense gratitude and admiration. Though your work may be taking a different direction, you will continue to inspire us. Natxo's legacy within the Network will always resonate with current and future members to pursue purposeful innovation, drive social good with passion, and soar to new heights.

Reflexión sobre la trayectoria y el impacto de Spain Flying Labs en la Red Global

Tras años de notables contribuciones e impactantes proyectos STEAM y de reforestación, Spain Flying Labs inicia un nuevo viaje más allá de la Red global. Siempre es una sensación agridulce cuando tenemos que despedirnos de un Flying Lab, más aún de uno que ha demostrado un tremendo compromiso y una excelente destreza en su trabajo con notables contribuciones al desarrollo de drones con fines de bien social. La salida de España de nuestra Red Global nos deja un momento para reflexionar sobre su impacto en los últimos cinco años y afirmar nuestra determinación de que continuarán con el espíritu de innovación más allá de la Red.

En 2019, bajo el liderazgo de Natxo Varona, España se convirtió en miembro oficial de nuestra Red Global, convirtiéndose en el 29º Flying Labs, comprometido a aprovechar su experiencia para fomentar una nueva generación de entusiastas de STEAM. Su trabajo abarcó desde la ecologización de paisajes mediante iniciativas de reforestación y la colaboración con otros colegas de los Flying Labs en importantes debates que dieron forma al crecimiento de la Red hasta el desarrollo de drones para la agricultura de precisión, y en su última creación de un robot autónomo de agricultura con manejo automático de aperos y con una precisión de menos de 5 centímetros, demostrando el poder transformador de la tecnología para mejorar nuestro mundo.

Su compromiso con el futuro no fue menos significativo. Con una serie de actividades STEAM organizadas, Spain Flying Labs se convirtió en un catalizador del cambio, animando a las mentes jóvenes a iniciarse en la robótica, familiarizarse con el montaje de un dron de código abierto, practicar metodología colaborativa y autoconocimiento, reflexionar sobre los múltiples usos de la tecnología de los drones y tomar conciencia de los retos sociales. Natxo y su equipo crearon espacios en los que niñas y niños podían soñar con carreras de ciencia y tecnología, rompiendo estereotipos y fomentando una cultura de inclusión.

La Conferencia Build Peace, celebrada en Alemania, fue también una prueba de su dedicación al trabajo de otros Flying Labs. Allí, junto con los Flying Labs de Camerún, Bolivia y Uganda, dirigieron una sesión de demostración de STEAM para adultos y niños. Este acto puso de manifiesto su destreza y su creencia en la unidad del aprendizaje para todas las edades.

Spain Flying Labs fue más que un simple participante en la Red: fue una fuerza motriz en varios cursos internos, seminarios web y grupos de trabajo. Ya fuera prestando su voz al grupo de trabajo de traducción para traducir recursos para los Flying Labs españoles, participando en debates en torno a la ética de los datos para mejorar la seguridad general de la privacidad del uso de drones en diferentes sectores, avanzando en la innovación en el sector agrícola a través del grupo de trabajo de robótica agrícola, o contribuyendo a dar forma al curso de cultura de seguridad, encarnaron el espíritu de colaboración y crecimiento compartido.

Como suele decirse en español, "Hasta luego", reflexionamos sobre su trayectoria con inmensa gratitud y admiración. Aunque su trabajo con nosotros tome una dirección diferente, los caminos seguirán inspirándonos. El legado de Natxo dentro de la Red siempre resonará con los miembros actuales y futuros para perseguir la innovación con propósito, impulsar el bien social con pasión y alcanzar nuevas cotas.
