New Japan Flying Labs Committed to Build a More Resilient Country

After a first webinar held by Aoyama Gakuin University’s Professor Taichi Furuhashi, our highly anticipated Japan Flying Labs is finally debuting with a very clear action plan: building a more resilient country.

Run by Prof. Furuhashi with the support of Kazuaki Fujii and Manabu Togawa, and endorsed by NPO Crisis Mappers Japan, DRONEBIRD and Furuhashi Laboratory - AOYAMA VISION, Japan Flying Labs will channel its efforts toward humanitarian, environmental and educational activities revolving around drones for social good.

With the help of fixed-wing drones, multicopters and Panorama/VR devices, our Japanese knowledge hub will use high-resolution imaging to monitor and survey disaster-hit and disaster-prone regions to collect data that allow for faster and more informed decision-making during a crisis.

In fact, while aerial mapping and satellite imaging are crucial for assessing damages caused by floods, landslides, volcanoes, earthquakes or tsunamis, they present some serious limitations when it comes to unpredictable weather conditions such as clouds or volcanic smoke which prevent first responders to gather smooth data feed. This is when drones, by virtue of their intrinsic flexibility, become an essential and tool for quick decision-making in situations of emergencies where time is everything.

Japan Flying Lab is committed to leverage its local expertise and build local capacity through knowledge sharing within its communities, with the goal of building a country that is more resilient in its journey against natural disasters.
