Dominican Republic Flying Labs Explores The Integration Of Drone Technology Into Civil Engineering Education

In recent years, drones have emerged as a revolutionary tool in civil engineering. These aerial marvels have proven themselves indispensable in a wide array of applications, from conducting construction inspections and topographic surveys to maintaining energy infrastructures and managing risks. 

In light of this, it is essential to prepare upcoming professionals by integrating drone technologies and their myriad applications into the curricula of Civil Engineering programs. This way, they will be equipped to face the challenges that the future will bring us, armed with these technologies.

Recognizing the significance of this, DR Flying Labs joined forces with the Drone Innovation Center and the Innovation Laboratory of the Inter-American Development Bank Group (BIDLAB) in their initiative to develop a specialized training program tailored for civil engineering students from six universities in the Dominican Republic. This initiative aims to equip these students with knowledge of drone operations and their applications in activities related to the supervision of work. 

This training, a vital component of the regional project Digitalization and Technological Optimization Model for SMEs in Construction Supervision (ATN/ME-17122-RG), is a trailblazing venture in the country. It promises to unlock a plethora of opportunities for skill development for new engineering professionals in the realm of data capture and processing, as well as the effective application of drone technologies in infrastructure works.

The purpose of the Drones a la Obra Dominican Republic is to enlighten future Dominican civil engineers about the pivotal role of drone technology and geospatial data in the field of infrastructure and construction works. The program is meticulously structured, featuring a theoretical and a practical phase. This provides the opportunity for future engineers to perform flight operations with drones, paving the way for further specialization in these transformative technologies.

The significance of gender equality is not overlooked in this visionary endeavor. Men and women alike participate in the program, ensuring that both genders have the same professional opportunities. This deliberate inclusivity contributes to narrowing the existing gender gap in the utilization of drones, fostering a more balanced and diverse technological landscape.

To solidify their enthusiasm and knowledge, the students and professors were invited to participate in the first National Drone Congress and the Drone Flight Exhibition. This event, organized by the Drone Innovation Center, the Santo Domingo Cyber Park with the support of  BIDLAB, the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), and DR Flying Labs, is a testament to the fusion of academia and practical application.  The congress was developed within the framework of the second edition of Dominicana Innova with the support of the Government Office of Information and Communication Technologies (OGTIC) and the Innovation Cabinet.

We are happy to collaborate on initiatives like these, which create avenues to attract aspiring civil engineers to the world of drone technology so that they are equipped to face the challenges that the future will bring.

En los últimos años, los drones han surgido como una herramienta revolucionaria en la ingeniería civil. Estas maravillas aéreas se han demostrado indispensables en una amplia variedad de aplicaciones, desde realizar inspecciones de construcción y levantamientos topográficos hasta mantener infraestructuras energéticas y gestionar riesgos.

En vista de esto, es esencial preparar a los profesionales emergentes integrando las tecnologías de drones y sus múltiples aplicaciones en los planes de estudio de programas de Ingeniería Civil. De esta manera, estarán equipados para enfrentar los desafíos que el futuro nos traerá, armados con estas tecnologías.

Reconociendo la importancia de esto, DR Flying Labs se unió al Centro de Innovación de Drones y al Laboratorio de Innovación del Grupo Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BIDLAB) en su iniciativa para desarrollar un programa de formación especializado para estudiantes de ingeniería civil de seis universidades en la República Dominicana. Esta iniciativa tiene como objetivo equipar a estos estudiantes con conocimientos sobre operaciones de drones y sus aplicaciones en actividades relacionadas con la supervisión de obras.

Esta capacitación, un componente vital del proyecto regional "Digitalización y Modelo de Optimización Tecnológica para PYMEs en Supervisión de Construcción (ATN/ME-17122-RG)", es una empresa pionera en el país. Promete desbloquear una plétora de oportunidades para el desarrollo de habilidades para nuevos profesionales de la ingeniería en el ámbito de la captura y procesamiento de datos, así como la aplicación efectiva de tecnologías de drones en obras de infraestructura.

El propósito de "Drones a la Obra República Dominicana" es iluminar a los futuros ingenieros civiles dominicanos sobre el papel crucial de la tecnología de drones y los datos geoespaciales en el campo de las obras de infraestructura y construcción. El programa está meticulosamente estructurado, presentando una fase teórica y una práctica. Esto brinda la oportunidad a los futuros ingenieros de realizar operaciones de vuelo con drones, abriendo el camino para una mayor especialización en estas tecnologías transformadoras.

La importancia de la igualdad de género no se pasa por alto en este esfuerzo visionario. Tanto hombres como mujeres participan en el programa, asegurando que ambos géneros tengan las mismas oportunidades profesionales. Esta inclusividad deliberada contribuye a reducir la brecha de género existente en la utilización de drones, fomentando un panorama tecnológico más equilibrado y diverso.

Para solidificar su entusiasmo y conocimientos, se invitó a los estudiantes y profesores a participar en el primer Congreso Nacional de Drones y la Exhibición de Vuelo de Drones. Este evento, organizado por el Centro de Innovación de Drones, el Parque Cibernético de Santo Domingo con el apoyo de BIDLAB, el Instituto Dominicano de Aviación Civil (IDAC) y DR Flying Labs, es un testimonio de la fusión de la academia y la aplicación práctica. El congreso se desarrolló en el marco de la segunda edición de Dominicana Innova con el respaldo de la Oficina Gubernamental de Tecnologías de la Información y Comunicación (OGTIC) y el Gabinete de Innovación.
