Bolivia Flying Labs Aims to Introduce More Women to Drones, Robotics

The vast majority of drone pilots worldwide are men (some estimates suggest nearly 90 percent). Learning of this statistic, Fundación Trabajo Empresa (FTE), led by Rene Salomón, decided to do something about it. 

“Startup Huddle: Women in Command of a Drone” was organized in April to showcase the many opportunities arising from the proliferation of drones and their applications across sectors. Erika Lopez, for example, is the founder of Eagleye Bolivia and served as a distinguished guest speaker. Eagleye Bolivia uses drone technology for construction surveys. 

Days after the event, the organizers and guest speakers were introduced to Flying Labs by Panama Flying Labs’ Dania Montenegro. Dania highlighted the Network’s important work and explained how Flying Labs empower their communities with the responsible use of drones. So for FTE, Eagleye Bolivia, and Drone Lab Bolivia, the choice was clear, and Bolivia Flying Labs was born.

The team is led by Salomón, who serves as Flying Labs Director, and is supported by Erika Lopez, Flying Labs Coordinator, and data expert Henry Saucedo. Salomón brings nearly two decades of experience in entrepreneurship, education and training, and nonprofit leadership, and Lopez’s expertise in self-and-team development, strategic planning, and innovation. 

Bolivia Flying Labs aims to create inclusive and immersive learning experiences with drones and robotics for the next generation of innovators—particularly women. The team plans to join forces with other institutions to bring in-person and online training and events to a broader audience. With their inclusion in the Flying Labs Global Network, Bolivia Flying Labs hopes to tap other local experts for their guidance and support as they begin the next phase of their journey.
