Since the approval of the Civil Aviation (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) Regulations, 2019 Act, last year, Unmanned Aerial Systems or drones are increasingly getting popular in Kenya in various sectors such as agriculture, mining, construction, mapping and survey, media, cargo delivery, and infrastructure inspection among others. As a result, there is a growing demand from different quarters. True to the spirit of Kenyan’s innovativeness, enterprise, and ingenuity, solutions and applications are already available for these sectors, signaling employment creation for youth.

Kenya Flying Labs, a licensed drone company, based in Nairobi (KCAA/OPS/2117/ROC/06), has teamed up with Global Air Drones AcademyBlue Globe Innovation, and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority through the support of the U.S. Embassy in Kenya to bring the Kenyan Drone Business Competition (KDBC) 2022. Applications can be submitted here from December 7 through January 13, 2022.

The Kenyan Drone Business Competition 2022 (KDBC) seeks to nurture creativity and hone entrepreneurial skills among Kenya-based early-stage technology entrepreneurs interested in drones.

Competitors can apply to be selected as one of 25 Entrepreneurs to participate in a 5-Day virtual boot camp where they will have the opportunity to create and pitch their drone business idea while learning about the drone industry from experienced drone professionals at The Global Air Drone Academy (GADA). GADA is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) licensed drone services company headquartered in Baltimore, USA. After the virtual boot camp, judges will select ten finalists invited to Nairobi to participate in a 2-Day practical training. On day one, finalists will experience hands-on training on drone technology, and on day two, pitch their drone business idea live to a panel of judges. Three (3) Winners will be selected to win the KDBC 2022 prize. KFL will then induct the three finalists on the DevRobotics program to mentor, nature, and horn the finalists’ skills in the different sectors they will be selected in.

This comprehensive training will teach budding entrepreneurs how to relate this new technology to real-world practical solutions, create and pitch a business idea, safely operate and fly a drone, and the best ways to market their startup in 2022 and beyond.
