How Drones Are Used in Disaster Risk Management

Humanitarian drone missions do not end when a drone lands. In many ways, they begin when the drone lands since obviously, it's all about the data. So unless there is a structure (and capacity) in place to turn the data into decision support, then one must question whether drones ought to be deployed in the first place.

Every year, Africa is affected by dozens of different disasters, like droughts, floods, and devastating storms. Between 2000 and 2019, 1,143 of such events were recorded, causing the death of 46,000 people and impacting more than 330 million people.

Tanzania Flying Labs was given the honor of moderating a session to explore how drones are used in disaster risk management at the recently held African Drone Forum in Rwanda with panelists from 5 different countries and backgrounds. #ADF2020
