The Latin America and the Caribbean Flying Labs came together in Punta Can in the Dominican Republic from November 26th to 28th, 2024. Flying Labs members from this region put together exciting topics to discuss that will ultimately strengthen regional engagement and collaboration.
Hosted in a collaborative and engaging atmosphere, this event brought together key representatives from various Flying Labs across the region to discuss past achievements, ongoing projects, and future strategies. The sessions focused on the sustainability and growth of the Flying Labs Network. We discussed the regional strategy for 2024 and how to co-create a sustainable approach for strengthening collaboration among Flying Labs in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Alberto Gallardo from Mexico Flying Labs presented two ongoing case studies. The first focused on mapping tropical forest biomass using LiDAR technology in Calakmul and Pantanos de Centla, comparing field data with LiDAR-based mathematical models to estimate atmospheric carbon and support climate change prevention efforts. The second project showcased the use of LiDAR scanning for archaeological research, conducting planimetric surveys of key sites such as Metzontla, Buenavista, and Iglesia Vieja. These analyses provided valuable insights into architectural styles and cultural identity in the region.
The retreat concluded with an open networking session, allowing representatives from 11 countries to strengthen professional relationships and explore future partnerships. Closing remarks celebrated the event’s success and reinforced our shared commitment to advancing the impact of drone technology in the region.

Del 26 al 28 de noviembre de 2024, los Flying Labs de América Latina y el Caribe se reunieron en Punta Cana, República Dominicana, para un esperado Retiro Regional. Este evento dinámico brindó una plataforma participativa para que miembros de toda la región discutieran temas clave con el objetivo de fortalecer la colaboración y el compromiso regional.
En un ambiente colaborativo y estimulante, este evento reunió a representantes clave de diversos Flying Labs de la región para debatir logros pasados, proyectos en curso y estrategias futuras. Las sesiones se centraron en la sostenibilidad y el crecimiento de la red de Flying Labs. Se analizó la estrategia regional para 2024 y se coestructuró un enfoque sostenible para fortalecer la colaboración entre los Flying Labs de América Latina y el Caribe.
Alberto Gallardo, de Mexico Flying Labs, quien presentó dos estudios de caso en curso. El primero abordó el mapeo de biomasa en bosques tropicales mediante tecnología LiDAR en Calakmul y Pantanos de Centla, comparando datos de campo con modelos matemáticos basados en LiDAR para estimar el carbono atmosférico y apoyar la prevención del cambio climático. El segundo proyecto destacó el uso de escaneo LiDAR en investigaciones arqueológicas, realizando levantamientos planimétricos en sitios clave como Metzontla, Buenavista e Iglesia Vieja. Estos análisis proporcionaron valiosa información sobre los estilos arquitectónicos y la identidad cultural de la región.
El retiro finalizó con una sesión abierta de networking, permitiendo a representantes de 11 países fortalecer relaciones profesionales y explorar futuras colaboraciones. Durante el cierre, se destacó el éxito del evento y se reafirmó el compromiso compartido de seguir impulsando el impacto de la tecnología de drones en la región.
