Drones for Social Good Event in Tanzania Highlights Growing Local Businesses

The value of aerial and underwater imagery is becoming more apparent as Tanzania-based researchers and NGOs seek to maximise the potential of spatial data. However, there is still very little awareness of local organisations which provide drones-as-service in Tanzania, despite the country being ranked third in the drone readiness index in Africa.

This is one of the most compelling reasons behind Drones for Social Good - a Tanzania Flying Labs' event launched on August 3, 2018 in Dar es Salaam, which will become a continuous effort to showcase the technology and its most innovative applications, while concurrently promoting local companies and industry professionals.

A real-time mapping using DroneDeploy was definitively one of the event's highlights for its tangible benefits. This Live Map feature allows a drone operator to acquire in-flight data for rapid insights and decision making, without downloading or processing delays. It took only 5 minutes to acquire the mosaic below and when compared to the cloudy satellite base map overlay, its immediate value is remarkably high.

Agrinfo, the online database that documents the farmlands ownership in Tanzania, was also in attendance to discuss the ever-growing role of drones in agriculture. The company perfectly exemplifies the role of Tanzania Flying Labs in the regional drone space as a product of our business incubation program and we intend to replicate their success with future programs to scout local dynamic entrepreneurs interested in drone usage for social good purposes.
