At Flying Labs, we remain committed to training professionals by developing competencies in drone technology, promoting its safe and efficient use as a key tool across various disciplines—and in this case, for ongoing scientific research.
This year, two groups of researchers participated in our workshop on drone use and applications. These training sessions were part of the “Geospatial Sciences Training Program for Scientific Researchers with an Emphasis on Earth Observations,” organized by Esri Panama and aimed at SENACYT researchers from various institutions. Both editions of the workshop were held at Ciudad del Saber, the first in February and the second in June.
The workshop was developed using a project-based methodology. Participants first received essential knowledge on drone operation, airspace regulations, drone-based photogrammetry, and other key topics. Later, through a practical mission, they applied what they learned to carry out a complete workflow—from aerial image capture to transforming those images into GIS (Geographic Information System) products.
Thanks to this training process, researchers were able to experience firsthand the capabilities of drones and identify how to integrate them into their projects. Their research covered diverse areas such as environmental conservation, civil works, and aeronautical studies, demonstrating the versatility of this technology.
During the flight practice, participants encountered real-world challenges associated with drone use, including technical failures, unexpected app updates, and weather-related variations. These experiences helped them better understand the key considerations for responsible and efficient use of the technology.
The active participation of the researchers reflected a growing interest in the applications and benefits of drones to strengthen their projects.

En Flying Labs continuamos comprometidos con la formación de profesionales mediante el desarrollo de competencias en tecnología dron, promoviendo su uso seguro y eficiente como herramienta clave para diversas disciplinas y, en este caso, para investigaciones científicas en curso.
Este año, dos grupos de investigadores participaron en nuestro taller sobre el uso y las aplicaciones de los drones. Estas capacitaciones formaron parte del “Programa de Formación en Ciencias Geoespaciales para Investigadores Científicos con Énfasis en Observaciones de la Tierra”, organizado por Esri Panamá y dirigido a investigadores de SENACYT pertenecientes a distintas instituciones. Las dos ediciones del taller se llevaron a cabo en Ciudad del Saber, la primera en febrero y la segunda en junio.
El taller se desarrolló mediante una metodología basada en proyectos. Inicialmente, los participantes recibieron conocimientos esenciales sobre el uso de drones, normativas de espacio aéreo, fotogrametría con dron y otros temas fundamentales. Posteriormente, en una misión práctica, aplicaron lo aprendido para ejecutar un flujo de trabajo completo: desde la captura aérea de imágenes hasta su transformación en productos SIG (Sistemas de Información Geográfica).
Gracias a este proceso formativo, los investigadores pudieron experimentar de primera mano las capacidades del dron y visualizar cómo integrarlo en sus proyectos. Las investigaciones representaban diversas áreas, entre ellas conservación ambiental, obras civiles y estudios aeronáuticos, demostrando la versatilidad de esta tecnología.
Durante la práctica de vuelo surgieron retos reales asociados al uso de drones, como fallos técnicos, actualizaciones inesperadas de aplicaciones y variaciones del clima. Estas experiencias permitieron a los participantes comprender mejor las consideraciones claves para un uso responsable y eficiente de la tecnología.
La participación activa de los investigadores evidenció el interés creciente en las aplicaciones y beneficios de los drones para potenciar sus proyectos.
