The 9th Annual Coding Summer School by Think Young took place in Nairobi, Kenya, over two weekends in November. Kids were treated to fun and interactive learning together with their peers as Kenya Flying Labs were honored to mentor and teach the kids for the second year running.
The Annual Coding Summer School event sponsored by Boeing, Think Young, and the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT), aims to encourage science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education among young students. Through the program, kids get to meet and learn from guest speakers, workshops, and practical activities. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the event continued with adherence to set measures.
So what have the students been doing during the COVID-19 break? Coding, of course! At the event, the kids learned and had prepared projects, like simple games, on websites they developed and showcased to their friends.
Kenya Flying Labs introduced and engaged the young students with drones and drone operations. We took the time to demonstrate how drones operate with appropriate safety precautions. The sessions were so lively; we marveled at their interest and curiosity. One-on-one engagements with the students helped us learn more about them and how they learn, and we foresee integrating this approach into our programs and the curriculum soon.
The STEM skills that these students learned will certainly benefit them as they continue their studies and, eventually, launch into their careers. Thanks to all the participants, and we look forward to next year's event!
